The final release in the Variants series.

1. SHOWERED IN WHITE LIGHT (7.13)
is a new composition and an imagining of walking towards the light. In contrast to the final track on this EP which is a step into the dark, yet both uplifting to my ears. I’ve used voice samples of Lisen Rylander Löve throughout the track.

2. NEW SOUL 2018 (5.28)
is based around a melody and chord progression that I had stored in midi form on a data filer drive since the early 90’s. I used it to initiate an improvisation in the studio with Porcupine Tree that eventually became “Buying New Soul”, a piece we frequently played live. I performed this with Steven Wilson recently at one of his Royal Albert Hall concerts and since had it in mind to revisit my original part with a new arrangement. The intro and coda sections feature an amazing thunderstorm that I recorded during the Rain Tree Crow album sessions in the South of France.

3. RUN LOLA (9.34)
I guested with a band called The Bays on many occasions. They never released a record and never rehearsed, thus every live performance was improvised and unique. We played live to showings of the film “Run Lola Run” a few times, most notably from a floating barge in Sydney harbour.
This is my opening theme piece for a film that already has a cool soundtrack. A futile gesture it could be said. Featuring Luca Calabrese - trumpet, Lisen Rylander Löve - voices and Gill Morely - reversed violin, RB - synthesisers, sampler and percussion programming.

4. UNHOLY live 2017 (9.28)
was recorded at the Blue Orange Theatre in Birmingham. The first time I played this live with Lisen Rylander Löve - saxophone, kalimba, electronics. RB - synthesisers, loops, keyboards, all percussion parts on backing track.

5. SHUT DOWN (5.04)
is a drone piece and a direction that interests me more these days. Knowing I’d be recuperating after a recent operation, I prepared a mini analog modular set up that would be within easy reach, and this was one of the results. I think it nicely brings to an end this “Variants” series. It’s been an interesting year and I want to thank you all for supporting this music and encouraging me to make more.
